OVERVIEW

The Tersano lotus PRO creates Stabilized Aqueous Ozone (SAO), a simple, safe, sustainable way to replace traditional chemical-based cleaners, sanitizers, and deodorizers. An environmentally-friendly solution, SAO is approved and certified by a number of organizations including Green Seal, HACCP, OSHA, and more.

As an outcome of the Compass Support Service Multi-Sector Products Review, inclusive of Healthcare, Education and B & I, Middle Tennessee State University conducted a months-long trial of SAO in one of its academic buildings. The objective of the trial was to demonstrate a level of cleaning on par with or better than the current chemical solution while also being able to simplify the process, increase savings, and decrease the impact MTSU’s chemicals had on the environment.

THE CHALLENGE

With 56 buildings, over 2 million square feet of cleanable surfaces, and hundreds of frontline employees on his watch, Brian Addington, Unit Director of Facility Services for Middle Tennessee State University, is always on the look-out for ways to make his program simpler, safer, and more sustainable. Addington is part of SSC, a division of Compass USA.

“It’s a big job,” notes Addington. “And when we used chemicals it was even bigger with multiple products, multiple training regimen, and countless safety manuals. Add to that the ordering, managing, storing, mixing and disposing of all those chemicals and obviously I was looking for a better process, better product, and better program.”

REDUCING CARBON FOOTPRINT

In 2011, Addington attended a Crothall new product trade show in Wayne, PA and was introduced to Tersano’s Lotus PRO which creates Stabilized Aqueous Ozone, a replacement for traditional chemicals. His interest was piqued. “We conducted a trial and had very good results,” he explains. “It turned out to be up-to-par – if not better than, chemicals. That certainly helped staff to embrace it. Once they saw the results, they accepted it and ran with it.”

THE SOLUTION

The Tersano lotus PRO system creates a simpler, safer, more sustainable alternative to traditional cleaning chemicals called Stabilized Aqueous Ozone (SAO). SAO can maintain numerous hard surfaces such as floors, windows, stainless, carpet, whiteboards, tile and much more across a typical college or university campus. Along with replacing and outperforming traditional cleaners, SAO is suitable for everyday use.

TRIAL OUTCOMES

  • One of the clear benefits from the trial was the dramatically-reduced number of chemicals in use. Sustainability was a benefit as well – with the university’s carbon footprint decreasing noticeably: “Switching from chemicals has enabled us to reduce our carbon footprint and that’s important to our leadership as MTSU is always looking for ways to be more environmentally-friendly.”
  • Staff has embraced the new cleaning process well. “We’ve received great feedback from our frontline associates,” says Addington. “They love it and have had very few, if any problems at all.”
  • As always, knowledge-sharing and open communication were keys to acceptance during and after the trial. “Communicating as much knowledge as possible up front was key to getting buy-in. We were very clear about what it does and doesn’t do. Then, we just let the product speak for itself.”

SUMMARY

Today, most are pleased with Addington’s decision to switch from traditional chemicals to stabilized aqueous ozone – even his superiors. “It was a little bit of a hard sell to the leadership team,” he shares. “They really wanted to see the ROI before we made the change. But today, they are happy with what we’ve done. It definitely helps that Tersano is so responsive and great to work with.” “This is an exceptional product,” says Addington. “I would definitely recommend it. We’re always looking for the next big thing, and this is it.”
